The end of an era

June 29, 2010

I just came across this brilliant article (Thank you Devin) about the evolution of the garment industry in America from the perspective of one woman, Cindy Ferrara.

There are a few points in the article that I found particularly interesting. Cindy called you out America, she says you don’t know how to tell if something fits anymore! Well, that’s probably true of a lot of people and it’s pretty tough with vintage clothing. That’s one of the biggest problems with vintage clothing, there’s no stretch in the garments so a lot of people try on garments that are much too small for them hoping the elastic that saves their ass in all their modern garments will be there to help them. Well it’s not, so be careful when you’re trying to zip up that beautiful 1960′s Saks Fifth Ave silk dress.

But it’s not your fault, American garment manufacturers have lost their way. They can’t create a garment that fits you properly without putting stretch into it. And apparently, American garment companies don’t even create garments anymore it’s all done in China, they design it, source the materials and manufacturer it. All American companies do is market the goods, ship them, warehouse and resell them. It’s kind of a shame.

Anywhere here is the article from the New York Times blog.
