The Wizard of North Ferrisburgh

June 21, 2010

It’s not every day you meet a wizard, but today I did. I was driving north on route 7 and just a little outside of Middlebury I saw a tidy gentleman in a fedora with a beautifully jewel inlaid walking staff and a duffel bag. He got in the car and handed me a beautiful amethyst crystal and told me there is one wish contained in the crystal.

I said, “Thank you, my name is James, what’s your name?”

“JAMES!”

“Yes I said.”

“That’s my name. James. I just thought I might have some fun with you. That crystal has one wish in it. Take it to your favorite place when it’s quiet and…” then gave me the rest of the instructions.

He mentioned that he made jewelery and I told him that I had a shop on Church Street in Burlington and that I have been looking for local artists to consign jewelery with. He showed me some of his beautiful Pipestone and Turquoise necklaces. Pipestone is the native American sacred stone of the earth. It’s the stone that they make their peace pipes out of and then wear the dust as war paint. The turquoise is the native American sacred stone of the sky. He had me try on one of the necklaces, I tried to give it back even though it was beautiful, but he made me keep it.

“Sometimes you just have to trust. You trusted me to pick me up.”

He’s going to be published soon in a national gem magazine and hopefully by then I’ll be carrying his beautiful jewelery, beads and bejeweled walking sticks.
