The holiday season is upon us  and the parties have only started. This year I’ve been invited to everything from your traditional cookie swaps and ugly holiday sweater parties,  to a glitz & glitter themed New Years Party, winter solstice gathering, and one end of the world party, which actually sounds like a lot of fun. I am lucky to have such a varied group friends and family to spend time with during the holidays but it makes outfit planning tricky. To make things easier I broke down the events into categories (casual, classic, kitchsy…) and put together a few outfits that will hopefully spark your seasonal style into overdrive.

Casual - cookie swaps, secret santa/white elephant/yankee swap parties, etc

I wish you could feel how buttery soft this suede jacket is, layered with cozy leggings and a classic striped knit this look is all about comfort and the bold mix of prints gives it a fun edge. Just add a beanie, sturdy boots, and a cross body bag and you’re ready.

 Kitchsy & Christmas-y - ugly Christmas, holiday sweater parties, hipster holiday parties…

Nothing says Feliz Navidad like a puff painted kitty in a Santa hat, add black ballet flats and a pair of wayfarers and you’re good to go.This look embraces the spirit of the ugly sweater party without getting too ugly, and the gold skirt will be the perfect piece for New Years! I love when a wardrobe piece can pull double duty like that.

Classic - office/work holiday events, casual drinks, family events, etcI love this simple winter white holiday look. It captures the simple beauty and innocence of the holidays without sacrificing any of the style. Lurking under that Rudolph red cardigan is a dress made for dancing with a sweetheart neckline, vintage lace overlay, and a skirt made for twirling. 

Chic & Sparkly - holiday cocktail parties, new years eve, girls night out, etcThis is a knock out look. Gold sequins and a stunning, fitted southwestern print blazer together ensure that you’re in for a night to remember. Add black tights a pair of booties or heels and glimmer your way through the holidays in this outfit. I’m kicking myself for not snatching up this blazer when I had the chance. Speaking of knock outs, can we pause for a minute to talk about this vest?! This vintage piece is stunning on it’s own but really pops against the cool mint green sweater and I love how the leather detailing on the leggings adds the perfect contrast to the looks softness. A bold pair of ankle boots, over-sized cocktail ring, and a 70′s inspired felt hat and this look will carry you from day to night in a snap.

I love pieces that can be styled multiple ways, not only does it save you money but it keeps your closet under control (a big challenge in my life). So this year when considering your Halloween costume options why not pick a look with pieces that you can easily work into your day to day wardrobe and wear over and over again.

This “cheetah girl” outfit is a great example of a costume with pieces you could wear again. This faux cheetah jacket would be easy to work into your day to day wardrobe, with jeans or spice up a classic LBD. I really love this costume. Both the print tank and simple black skirt can easily be worn again with a variety of pieces in your existing wardrobe.

What’s not to love?! This Madeline costume is made up of an adorable vintage dress and hat (I would love to get my hands on both). Both pieces are easy to wear again, on trend, and bring one of my favorite literary characters to life, all for only $36.

Believe it or not, this “angel of mine” costume is made up of a lot of practical pieces, including lace tights which are great layered over colored tights or under summery dresses. The slip is also a very practical wardrobe item, perfect to wear under dresses,skirts and sheer blouses alike. And once Halloween is over turn your wings into wall art by dip dyeing or bedazzeling them.

This “south of the boarder” costume is the perfect excuse to indulge in a great pair of cutoffs and cowboy boots (you can never have too many of either). This vibrant poncho would be a fun fall layering piece over a maxi dress or with a cute, peter pan collar blouse peeking out from underneath it.

Fall fashion is all about simple, traditional classics with unexpected twists. These vintage suede shorts are buttery soft and are surprisingly flattering on. Paired with this handmade vintage lace top that is unbelievably detailed and topped with a vintage Levi’s jacket the it’s a perfect mix of feminine and prairie. And with tights, classic boots or mocs, and a chic outer layer this look can easily transition into colder temps.

Get your warm weather wardrobe ready for sunny summer days with fun florals from Downtown Threads!

Florals are everywhere this spring and Downtown Threads* has them in just about every variety, so tap into your inner flower child and get ready to blossom with this colorful spring/summer trend!

The neon needlepoint tank top and pinstriped shorts I styled above gave off a breezy, feminine vibe that really surprised me. The moss colored shorts played off the hints of green in the top’s print while helping to soften up the neon and tie the whole look together.  Just add a cute denim jacket, pointy toe flats and your ready for fun in the sun!

I love this blouse, the print is a great combination of neutral colored safari/animal print with a smattering of bright florals. This blouse is perfect if you want to add a hint of color to a neutral look or  balance out a color blocked ensemble look like the one I put together above. The eyelet detailing on the shorts and bright blue leather button up add depth to this look and really make this blouse’s print pop. The leather blue button up really made this outfit for me, I love when staple pieces are done in unexpected color and fabric combinations, it adds a whole new element to the look and gives you a ton of options.

After taking these pictures I had a hard time not striping this look off the mannequin and immediately putting it on. The feminine print and cut of the dress took on a chic Parisian prairie vibe (that I loved!) with the blouse layered underneath. When mixing a bold floral print with another equally strong pattern keep the rest of your look simple. Avoid busy accessories and bulky or loose pieces as these will make your outfit look disheveled. To accessorize this look I opted for solid color heels and a simple sun hat so the  pattern mixing could really shine.

This navy and rose print dress is fabulous on it’s own but really pops when set against a classic striped blouse with ruffle detailing. This layered look is great for chillier spring days and perfect for making the transition from the office to after work drinks with the girls.

This is a great look to try if you like florals but can’t get pasted the feminine, “frou-frou” prints. There’s no denying this nude lace tank with floral detailing is sexy but it’s also practical. You can wear and layer this piece with the rest of your spring wardrobe and Downtown Threads has it in a ton of different colors. Speaking of colors, the skirt’s bold abstract print provides the perfect focal point (especially when paired with the nude tank) and I love how the it can be worn as a sleek wrap skirt (left) or with a bit of the materiel free for a more laid back look. Keep it chic by accessorizing this look with a tailored white blazer and gladiator sandals or play up the beach vibe with a floppy straw hat and fun wedges.

Happy first day of spring!

Hey, it’s Caitlin from Wore Out * and I don’t know about you but I’m done with winter and have already started to warm up my wardrobe with tribal prints, chic florals and maxi skirts in a rainbow of colors and patterns. With all the beautiful weather we’ve been having in I can’t help but get excited for summer. Burlington comes alive in the summer and so do the fashions you see on Church Street. Turn heads downtown this spring and summer with these bold patterns and fun prints.

Southwestern/Tribal prints are here to stay. Opt for pieces with unexpected details like studs or exposed hardware to keep your look fresh. This tribal print dress is a perfect example of how details like the braiding around the neckline and the “mullet” hemline can turn a sundress into something so much more. Pair this piece with bright sandals and a colorful sun hat for a perfect beach cover-up or jazz it up with color blocked heels and a cropped black blazer. Abstracts and Watercolor Prints, especially on vintage pieces can really make a splash this spring and summer.I’ve always loved purple and green together so this vintage dress with a funky abstract print was right up my alley. I went all out with the 60′s vibe and paired this look with a blush vest but this dress would look great simply belted with a pair of short cowboy boots, wedges, or flats. The soft abstract print on this sheer 60′s blouse captivated me. The print totally changes in the light and reminded me of a watercolor painting. I wanted to keep things light and ethereal so I paired the blouse with a sheer purple maxi skirt (with built in shorts). Play up the blouses delicate print by wearing it with “tougher” pieces like cutoffs and motorcycle boots, dyed high-waisted denim, or leather shorts for a sharp contrast.

Spring Ahead; pieces to wear now and laterWhen I first saw this skirt I joked to Carolyn, who curates the B-Side at Downtown Threads, that it looked like something my mom wore in the 80′s. Without missing a beat Carolyn turned to me and said, “you’re probably right but you’re not going style it the way your mom did, so it’s not the same.”  How right she is.

Make this floral midi skirt your own this winter with a chunky knit sweater, thick tights, oxford ankle booties and perfectly mused topknot. In the spring and summer loose the layers and show another side of this sunny skirt with a cropped linen top, leather sandals and woven bag.
